Sussex County Democrats are bashing Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin for accepting an endorsement from Assemblyman Parker Space (R-Wantage), saying they agree with statements from Democratic legislators questioning the pharmaceutical executive’s “ability to accurately lead New Jersey’s diverse constituency in the United State Senate.”
Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter (D-Paterson) and State Sen. Troy Singleton (D-Palmyra) took shots at Hugin this week after Space, who attracted some controversy last year when he posed in front of a confederate flag and called a female opponent a “bitch,” endorsed the Republican front-runner.
“The Sussex County Democratic Committee supports the statements of our fellow elected Democratic officials in the legislature and thank them for standing up to the blatantly racist and misogynistic behaviors and policies of Assemblyman Space,” said a statement issued by the party’s executive board. “Bob Hugin should be aware that his endorsement by Parker Space will be a heavy weight to carry during his race. Informed voters view Parker Space negatively not only in his own district, but throughout the state of New Jersey, and will remember this endorsement on election day.”
