ASSEMBLY SPEAKER CRAIG COUGHLIN

“From the American Revolution to the Global War on Terrorism, more than one million American veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery and dedication to country has made it possible to keep America safe and secure against enemies who would seek to destroy our way of life.

“It is in that spirit of great respect and gratitude for those who’ve made very selfless sacrifices in the name of freedom that I commemorate Memorial Day today. I pray for our Gold Star families and for the safe return of all those deployed today who find themselves in harm’s way.”

“God bless America.”

“On this day, we remember those from the armed forces that we’ve lost both on and off the battlefield.“Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and it started after the Civil War as a day to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. Eventually states began adopting the holiday and it was then renamed. Congress adopted the day to be a federal holiday in the 1970s. Many still take the time to place flags and flowers on the graves, and I’ll be at the Bordentown Memorial Day Ceremony, paying my respects to those that have fought for our freedom. “As we start the summer season and turn our eyes towards vacation and times outdoors, I hope you’ll join me in remembrance of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to enjoy this great nation.”

CONGRESSMAN CHRISTOPHER SMITH

“Today on Memorial Day, we commemorate and pay tribute to all the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line and paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our liberty and defend our great Nation. We are forever indebted to these American heroes and remember the tremendous sacrifice endured by their loved ones.”
