Julius “Jay” Coltre was re-elected Roseland Democratic Municipal Chairman tonight, bring an end to the fight over control of the small town Democratic organization between Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo and former Gov. Richard Codey.
Coltre was re-elected without opposition.
A DiVincenzo loyalist, Coltre faced a challenge when Codey recruited nine county committee candidates to run off the line in six of the districts. Coltre ran an aggressive campaign for his Line slate, including direct mail and a strong digital and social media component. Coltre had volunteers walking door-to-door for weeks in advance of the election.
Codey campaigned door-to-door, delivering signed copies of his book to targeted Democratic primary voters. On Election Day, the former governor stood outside the Borough Hall polling location for most of the day to greet voters.
The Line A ticket won 8 of 12 seats.
