Clocking in with a population of 311,549, Newark remained New Jersey’s largest city after the municipality-level results of the 2020 Census were released today.
Jersey City, which some suspected might surpass Newark, was in second place with 292,449 people. Rounding out the top five were Paterson, Elizabeth, and Lakewood.
Newark had a slower growth rate than Jersey City since the 2010 Census, with its population increasing by 12.4% versus Jersey City’s rate of 18.1%. But it wasn’t enough to make up the difference between the two cities, which now sits at 19,100.
