NJ Working Families Alliance Statement on Assembly and Senate Passing Automatic Voter Registration and the New Voter Empowerment Act

 

Trenton– In response to the passage of the S481/A2014 enacting Automatic Voter Registration in NJ agencies and A1521 the “New Voter Empowerment Act” permitting 17 year olds to vote in primary election if they turn 18 years old before next succeeding general election in both the Assembly and Senate, New Jersey Working Families Executive Director, Analilia Mejia, issued the following statement:

 

“New Jersey Working Families congratulates both houses of the New Jersey legislature for their passage of S481/A2014 which adopts Automatic Voter Registration through New Jersey agencies starting with MVC, and for their passage of the “New Voter Empowerment Act” permitting 17 year olds to vote in primary election if they turn 18 years old before next succeeding general election. Champions of these measures should be commended for their foresight in advocating for smart and necessary voting reforms that are not only proactive but have proven to increase registration and participation in the states that have adopted similar measures. We hope these are great first steps in the pursuit of the Democracy building measures former Governor Christie vetoed during his tenure.”
