The following are statements from Mayor Santiago, a joint statement from community leaders, and Brigid Callahan Harrison, candidate for Congress for New Jersey’s second congressional district.
Statement from Millville Mayor Michael Santiago
“Brigid and I share many similar experiences and values. We have both faced tremendous adversity in our lives and have experienced firsthand the threat a lack of health care can have on our families.
“Losing her first husband to cancer and most recently having her second husband fight for his life from a hospital bed with COVID-19, I can identify personally with Brigid story and I know my family can always depend on her to fight for issues that matter.
“Brigid was the first and only candidate to bring people together and create a unified, thorough, and detailed COVID recovery plan for our area and she actually understands the policies needed to revitalize South Jersey’s economy. Right now, this moment does not allow us to take any risks. The stakes are far too high. We must elect someone who has been tested on policy matters. We must elect someone who truly understands what it means to fight and sacrifice to ensure South Jersey’s gets their fair share from Washington. And most of all, we must elect someone who will actually be able to beat Jeff Van Drew. As Senators Menendez and Booker have said, it is clear, that person is Brigid and I will be very proud to see her not only beat Van Drew, but to become the first woman elected to Congress in the 2nd district.
Mayor Santiago is joined in endorsing Brigid by a coalition of some of the most influential leaders in the Hispanic community who issued the following statement:
Brigid Callahan Harrison will be a strong advocate in congress for Latinos to achieve equality in the United States.
In order to achieve this equality in Washington, there are laws and practices that need to be addressed. One of the most difficult is to elect the right representative for Congress. This person must oversee and care for the welfare of all communities equally. We strongly believe Brigid
Callahan Harrison has the leadership skills and the know how to fight for health care, education, and social and economic needs. It is for these reasons that we support Brigid Callahan Harrison. She will support our well-being and protect us all equally. Brigid is well prepared educationally and employs a humanistic approach when dealing with the needs of the people of the United States.
