Congress takes bipartisan action to care for seniors
Congressman Tom MacArthur released the following statement on how the bipartisan spending bill will help care for our seniors. Congressman MacArthur’s district is home to more than 140,000 residents over 65 years of age. This is the highest senior population of any congressional district in New Jersey and one of the highest in the entire United States:
My district is home to over 140,000 seniors who deserve to receive the best care possible. This bipartisan spending bill will achieve this by helping to modernize the Social Security Administration ensuring seniors get their payments on time, provide affordable housing, and protect critical programs that help the elderly in their daily lives like, Meals on Wheels, the Tax Counseling for Elderly Program, and the State Health Insurance Program. We must do all we can to better serve our seniors and I’ll continue to work across the aisle and stand up for them in Congress.
Background information:
The omnibus includes:
$1.8B for NIH to study Alzheimer which is a $414M increase from last year.
$12.9B for Social Security Administration’s administrative budget which will address backlogs and ensure seniors get their payments on time.
Increased funding for Administration for Community Living programs that ensure seniors can live independently and where they choose, including $897M for senior nutrition programs (with $246M for Meals on Wheels).
Increased funding for National Family Caregiver support program
$49M for State Health Insurance Program to help seniors with Medicare questions
