Gov. Phil Murphy met with former President Donald Trump at his Bedminster golf club on Saturday in what his office described as a chance to wish him well in person following an assassination attempt one week earlier, the Washington Post reported.
The news of Murphy’s private meeting with the Republican presidential nominee comes as the two-term governor is being mentioned as a potential vice president candidate on a ticket with Kamala Harris.
“Governor Murphy and the First Lady reached out to former President Trump immediately after last weekend’s assassination attempt to say that they were keeping him in their prayers. While the former President is recuperating at his residence in New Jersey, they had an opportunity to wish him well in person this past Saturday,” Murphy spokesman Mahen Gunaratna told the Post. “The Governor is an American first and believes an issue as serious as the safety of current and former presidents transcends partisan politics.”
The report, quoting sources briefed on the conversation between Murphy and Trump, said the two discussed the presidential race and other topics, with a focus on the attempted assassination and the former president’s health.
First Lady Tammy Murphy was present at the meeting.
