A former top aide to Democratic State Chairman John Currie will help set up Michael Bloomberg’s presidential campaign in New Jersey.
Axel Owen, the political director of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee from 2018 to 2019, will be the organizing director for Bloomberg.
Owen managed Vin Gopal’s 2017 campaign for State Senate against three-term incumbent Jennifer Beck, and ran the re-election campaigns of Assemblymen Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick) and Roy Freiman (D-Hillsborough).
“I am sure that the Democratic activists, labor leaders, campaign managers and candidates that have not yet worked with Axel will soon appreciate his savvy and responsiveness as much as those who already have,” Currie said in 2018. “I am eager to set him loose and see what he can do in the varied political turf of the state’s 21 counties.”
Michael Muller, a top New Jersey political strategist, will serve as Bloomberg’s state director.
Muller has close ties to South Jersey Democratic leaders, but he might be on his own. With Cory Booker out of the race, South Jersey Democrats are widely expected to support Joe Biden for the presidential nomination.
