Masks will no longer be required on NJ Transit, Murphy says

Decision comes after court strikes down federal transit mask mandate

After U.S. District Judge Kathryn Mizelle struck down a federal mask mandate on planes and other public transit yesterday, Gov. Phil Murphy announced this morning that NJ Transit’s masking requirement will also come to an end.

“[The Transportation Security Administration] announced that it’ll no longer enforce a mask mandate in public transportation settings,” Murphy wrote on Twitter. “Masks will no longer be required on [NJ Transit] & by South Jersey Transportation Authority. Individuals may wear a mask based on personal preference, informed by personal level of risk.”

The public transit mandate was one of the last ones still in place in New Jersey, after Murphy allowed requirements in schools and public buildings to end last month.

There has been little public polling on the transit-specific mandate, but a Monmouth poll from March 7 found that 68% of New Jerseyans agreed with the decision to end the school mask mandate.
