The Sierra Club, one of the county’s most influential environmental organizations, announced this morning that it is endorsing Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-Newark) for re-election in the 10th congressional district.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Sierra Club which is doing such important work combating climate change and protecting our environment,” Payne said of the endorsement. “Climate change and air pollution have a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable members of our community, and therefore the fight for environmental justice is integral to the fight for racial and economic justice.”
Payne, a former Newark City Council Speaker who has served in Congress since 2012, is considered the favorite for renomination against two Democratic foes, Imani Oakley and Akil Khalfani.
Oakley has raised a sizable amount of money for a challenger to a longtime incumbent, but Payne has the endorsements of most prominent New Jersey Democrats and national figures like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
