A group of more than 80 Democratic women, some of whom bear a large degree of political power, announced the formation of New Jersey Women for Biden Wednesday.
“Women Democrats across New Jersey have worked with the Legislature and Governor Murphy to achieve important initiatives like equal pay and critical health care funding in our state,” said Laura Matos, the group’s organizer. “But it has never been more important to get a strong partner in the White House to stop the systematic decimation of women’s rights currently being perpetrated by the Trump Administration.”
The group includes progressives like Lambertville Mayor Julia Fahl, top government officials like Treasurer Liz Muoio and political titans like Maggie Moran, a managing partner at Kivvit.
Former Vice President Joe Biden now leads a two-candidate field for the Democratic nod to take on President Donald Trump.
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has said he intends to remain in the race, but his path to a primary victory is now narrower than it was in 2016, when he remained in the contest against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton until June.
Evesham Mayor Jackie Veasy, Union Township Mayor Michele Delisfort, Monmouth County Democratic Vice Chair Mary Foster, Edison Democratic Club President Suchitra Kamath, veteran lobbyist Jeannine LaRue and Hillside Mayor Dhalia Vertreese have also signed onto the pro-Biden group.
“We believe Joe Biden is that partner and we will be organizing events to register voters and help build support to make sure he is the nominee at the Democratic National Convention so that he can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Matos said. “We are also confident his candidacy during the general election will help carry our down-ballot Democratic candidates to continue the progress we are making here in New Jersey.”
