Gov. Phil Murphy made is Iowa debut on tonight, stumping for Cory Booker’s presidential campaign at an Irish bar in Des Moines.
“He was really well received,” Judy Downs, the executive director of the Polk County Democrats, told the New Jersey Globe. “He was very authentic. People liked that he stopped his speech halfway through to get a beer.”
About 45 Iowa Democrats attended the happy hour at Cooley’s Tavern, a turnout that Downs said was strong for a Tuesday night that followed a major state party event over the weekend.
“People really appreciated how Governor Murphy spoke of his personal relationship with Booker,” Downs said. “People related to him.”
According to Downs, Murphy was the first surrogate to appear in Iowa’s largest county on behalf of a 2020 presidential candidate.
Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) was with Booker in Cedar Rapids on Sunday.
