Moving in a different direction from Mayor Wilda Diaz, four members of Perth Amboy City Council have endorsed Cory Booker for president.
Diaz announced her support of Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination at a New Jersey rally two weeks ago. Perth Amboy Democrats have become estranged from Diaz, who defeated incumbent Joseph Vas in 2008.
Those of us from Perth Amboy know firsthand what Senator Booker has done for our state and our country,” said the four – Helmin Caba, William Petrick, Milady Tejeda, Fernando Izzaryy. “Senator Booker has long fought for the rights of the most vulnerable among us – first as mayor of Newark and then in the United States Senate.
Former Councilman Fernando Gonzalez also joined in on the endorsement.
“He believes in an economy that serves regular folks like those in Perth Amboy – not just the wealthiest among us. He believes in an education system that provides opportunity for every single child, not just for those living in the wealthiest school districts. He believes in a health care system that provides treatment to everyone, not just those who can afford the best treatment,” the Perth Amboy group said.
The five said that they have seen Booker’s commitment to his constituents first-hand.
“Whenever Perth Amboy has needed him, Senator Booker has been there – to fight for our priorities in Washington, to help us elect more Democrats at every level, to move our state forward in the right direction,” Caba, Petrick, Tejada, Irizzary and Gonzalez said.
