Jamestown Associates, Larry Weitzner’s national political media consulting firm that began as a local shop working for New Jersey Republican candidates, won eight Reed Awards for their work on the 2018 campaign.
Jamestown won more awards than any other political consulting firm in the nation.
The Reed Awards are named after Campaigns & Elections founder Stanley Foster Reed. Along with the Pollies, they are considered the most prestigious awards available for political consultants.
Jamestown won four awards for their work on the successful U.S. Senate campaign of Mike Braun in Indiana: Best Web Video for Primary Candidate, Most Original Web Video, Most Effective Comparative TV Ad, and Best Radio Ad for a Senatorial Campaign.
Braun was an outsider who defeated two incumbent congressmen in the GOP primary and ousted incumbent Brian Donnelly in the general election by a 51%-45% margin.
A television ad for Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker featuring a man who lost his 25-year-old son to a heroin overdose netted two awards for Jamestown: Best TV Ad for a Gubernatorial Candidate and Best 60 Seconds TV Ad. Baker won his second term with 70% of the vote.
Jamestown won two more awards for a referendum that defeated an anti-mining ballot initiative in Montana: Best TV Ad for a Ballot Initiative and Best Radio Ad for Public Affairs/Issue Advocacy Campaign or Ballot Initiative. The initiative lost with 59% of Montana voters opposing it.
New Jersey-based Checkmate Strategies, where Chris Russell is a partner, won three Reed Awards: Toughest Direct Mail Piece for a Republican, Best Mail Piece for County, Local or Judicial Candidate for a Republican, and Toughest Direct Mail Piece — their candidate, Chris Sobieski, won 53% in his successful East Amwell campaign.
Muller Public Strategies, run by New Jersey’s Michael Muller, won a Reed Award for Best Use of Opposition Research.
Kivvit, a public affairs firm with ties to New Jersey – managing partner Maggie Moran began her career as a New Jersey political operative – won two Reed Awards: Best Public Affairs Campaign for Move CT Forward, a coalition of groups seeking public attention to Connecticut’s infrastructure crisis.
Best Use of Online Targeting for their campaign to organize JetBlue flight attendants to unionize with the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU). TWU won the vote with 66%.
Montclair-based Publitics Political won a Reed Award for Most Sophisticated Targeting with Direct Mail for their work on a Millburn Township Committee race. Their client, Tara Prupis, defeated Republican incumbent Jodi Rosenberg by 425 votes, 52%-48%.
