A federal seat on the New Jersey Pinelands Commission will be filled by Jonathan D. Meade, the associate regional director of the National Parks Service and a longtime environmental leader in Pennsylvania.
Meade’s appointment by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland was announced on Monday by Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown).
“I’m proud that the New Jersey delegation, in a bipartisan way, was able to successfully advocate for this appointment,” Kim said. “The New Jersey Pinelands are a national treasure and it’s important for New Jersey that we have a federally appointed member of the board to ensure the commission can continue to preserve and protect the natural beauty for generations to experience.”
The New Jersey Senate confirmed three nominees to the panel made by Gov. Phil Murphy: Laura Matos, Theresa Lettman, and Davon McCurry.
Kim, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis), and eight other New Jersey House members, sent a letter to Haaland in May asking that she fill the vacancy. The federal seat on the commission had been unfilled since March 2017.
Meade joined the National Park Service in 2011 after working as the watershed program director for the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. He served as executive director of the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers and the Pennsylvania Highlands Coalition. He had previously worked at the NPS from 2000 to 2005.
