Moran says his last day at Star-Ledger is February 2

Editorial page editor will become a part-time blogger for Newhouse News Service

Tom Moran today acknowledged what others reported 42 days ago: that he’s out as editorial page editor of the Star-Ledger when the 192-year-old newspaper shuts down its print edition and shifts entirely to an online format.

He said he’s being laid off as of February 2, along with two other editorial writers, Dave D’Allesandro and Julie O’Connor.

“So, the press corps continues to shrink — good news for the bad guys, I’m afraid,” Moran said in a post on Facebook.  “After 30 years covering New Jersey politics, I’m done in February.  Imagine that.”

Moran’s announcement comes 42 days after others reported the same news, a metaphor of sorts for the Star-Ledger’s downfall.

Instead, Moran said he’d become a part-time blogger for the Newhouse News Service, writing a  weekly column on national politics.  That gig could last longer than his brief stint at PSE&G.

The announcement made no mention of Paul Mulshine, a longtime Star-Ledger columnist who is also being laid off, or the fate of letters to the editor, op-eds, and other projects Moran was involved in, including Friendly Fire.

In addition to the Star-Ledger, the Jersey Journal, Trenton Times, South Jersey Times, and Hunterdon County Democrat are ceasing their print operations.
