The Bergen County Republican Policy Committee endorsed Alex Zdan for the U.S. Senate, along with candidates to take on Democratic Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) and Nellie Pou (D-North Haledon).
The vote is merely advisory and does not restrict county committee members when they vote at the Bergen GOP convention next month.
Zdan, a former News 12 New Jersey reporter, defeated former Tabernacle Deputy Mayor Justin Michael Murphy, 26-11, in the race to find a challenger to take on Democratic U.S. Senator Cory Booker. A third candidate, Natalie Rivera, received two votes.
Richard Tabor, a New Jersey state trooper and U.S. Army combat veteran who has won the Atlantic and Union Republican organization endorsements, did not compete in Bergen. Zdan has party support in Passaic.
Robert Lebovics, an Englewood physician, said this month that he is likely to run. Less clear is the Senate candidacy of Steve Boston, an entrepreneur from Ocean City. Boston ran for Senate two years ago but never filed his nominating petitions. He filed a letter of intent to compete for party support in Bergen County in January, but later withdrew it.
Comedian Vinnie Brand, who owns a New Brunswick comedy club, said he was considering challenging Booker.
In New Jersey’s 5th, Sean Kirrane defeated Chandiha (Sandy) Gajapathy, 32-6, for the chance to take on Gottheimer.
In the next-door 9th district, the endorsement went to attorney Tiffany Glenn Burress by a narrow 21-18 vote against Clifton Councilwoman Rosie Pino. Burress is the wife of former Giants star Plaxico Burress.
