Newark Tax Collector Ernest Turner has resigned after auditors found a substantial amount of city funds missing, the New Jersey Globe has learned.
Some checks had been written to Turner himself, sources familiar with the probe say.
The matter has been turned over to the Essex County Prosecutor. A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
As tax collector, Turner handles the collection of property and utility bills, as well as tax liens and other municipal fees.
Turner makes $141,416 annually, records show.
