Democrats swept all four Washington Borough Council seats on Tuesday, defeating a Republican slate that included two incumbent council members and reversing the outcome of a contentious GOP primary earlier this year.
Josephine Noone led the field with 1,214 votes, followed by Jessica Lyons with 1,190, former Deputy Mayor Ethel Conroy with 1,178 and Sonia Rom with 1,129. All four Democrats secured seats on the council.
Republican incumbents Gerald “Jerry” Brown and Sherri Musick finished fifth and eighth, respectively. Brown received 893 votes, while Musick received 839.
Republican challengers Robert Mitchell, a firefighter and EMT, received 875 votes, and Betti Singh, an employment counselor with the New Jersey Department of Labor, received 861.
The Democratic slate included Conroy and Noone, both former council members, Lyons, a member of the Washington Borough Parent Teacher Organization, and Rom, a senior manager of advocacy and outreach at DASACC of Warren County.
The Republican slate featured Brown and Musick, who were backed by the Warren County Republican organization, alongside Mitchell and Singh.
The election followed a contentious Republican primary in which four incumbent council members split into competing slates. Brown and Musick’s slate prevailed, with Brown leading the field with 193 votes.
The general election results marked a significant setback for Republicans in a borough that leans Republican. Donald Trump carried Washington Borough by 10 percentage points in 2024.
The council race recorded 8,201 votes cast, with 22 write-in votes.
