Brennan condemns rush to defend Palmieri

By Nikita Biryukov, May 27 2020 6:11 pm

Katie Brennan issued a rebuke to Democrats rushing to defend Warren County Democratic Chairman Tom Palmieri from a sexual harassment allegation leveled by Sussex County Democratic Chairwoman Katie Rotondi.

“I hear you, Katie Rotondi. Coming forward is not politically expedient for victims and survivors, and we must support you and others as they seek justice,” Brennan said. “Fellow New Jersey Democrats — it is never convenient to hold your friends and colleagues accountable. But that is our charge. Have the uncomfortable conversation, rather than taking action to undermine a woman speaking out.”

Rotondi claimed Palmieri sexually harassed her, including by allegedly making a joke about drugging her drink during a fundraiser at Gov. Phil Murphy’s home.

For much of last year, Trenton was consumed by hearings on Brennan’s accusation of sexual assault against former Schools Development Authority chief of staff Al Alvarez.

“Just because someone never hurt you does not mean they have never hurt anyone else,” Brennan said. “How many times must we say it? Start with supporting victims — no matter their party.”
