Ewing Democrats have tossed an 81-year-old veteran councilwoman and replaced her with Carl Benedetti, Jr., a 36-year-old former three-term school board member and zoning board chairman.
Benedetti defeated Kathleen Wollert, who served as councilwoman in the 1990s and then returned in 2012, 2,749 to 1,915.
Councilwoman Sarah Steward was the top vote-getter in Tuesday’s primary election with 3,234 votes.
Local Democrats denied party support for Wollert’s re-election bid and backed Benedetti.
Steward is a former deputy chief of staff and district director to Rep. Rush Holt (D-Hopewell), who represented New Jersey’s 12th district until his retirement in 2014.
They are being challenged by Republicans James W. Anderson, a retired businessman, and John Wesley Brown, the founder and owner of Lighthouse Counseling Center.
Ewing is a Democratic stronghold that voted for Mikie Sherrill by nearly 50 points.
