Party-backed Democrats won two of the three nominations for the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday.
Ron Franceschini, Joe Pepitone, and LaRae Smith won the nomination; the former two had the backing of the county party, which has splintered in recent years.
As of 2:10 a.m., Pepitone led with 3,641 votes, Smith had 3,639, and Franceschini had 3,484. Trailing were Tanisha Gomez (2,858), party-backed Paul Thakkar (2,726), Jasmine Gomez-Demby (2,168), and Darwin Cooper (2,156).
Smith, the Commercial Township Democratic municipal chair, fell short in the primary last year.
Cumberland Democrats need to flip just one seat to take over control of the Board.
Last year, Democrats flipped two seats, putting them within in striking distance.
