Former Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale is preparing to launch a primary bid against incumbent Richard Berdnik to get his old job back.
Speziale was circulating petitions this weekend to enter the Democratic primary against Berdnik, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity. He has nearly $500,000 remaining in his warchest from his 2010 campaign.
A strong vote-getter in Passaic County, Speziale is prepared to run off the line in June. He has been distributing party declaration cards in an effort to make registered Republicans eligible to vote in the Democratic primary.
Nine years ago, Speziale resigned as sheriff and dropped his bid for a fourth term to take a position at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was succeeded by Berdnik.
Speziale is currently serving as the Paterson police director, a post he got under mayor Joey Torres and kept under the new mayor, Andre Sayegh.
He did not appear before the Passaic County Democratic screening committee, which picked Berdnik for re-election.
