Speziale moves toward primary challenge vs. Passaic sheriff

Sources: Three-term sheriff circulating petitions, asking Republicans to switch parties for ’19 primary

Former Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale is preparing to launch a primary bid against incumbent Richard Berdnik to get his old job back.

Speziale was circulating petitions this weekend to enter the Democratic primary against Berdnik, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.  He has nearly $500,000 remaining in his warchest from his 2010 campaign.

A strong vote-getter in Passaic County, Speziale is prepared to run off the line in June.  He has been distributing party declaration cards in an effort to make registered Republicans eligible to vote in the Democratic primary.

Nine years ago, Speziale resigned as sheriff and dropped his bid for a fourth term to take a position at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  He was succeeded by Berdnik.

Speziale is currently serving as the Paterson police director, a post he got under mayor Joey Torres and kept under the new mayor, Andre Sayegh.

He did not appear before the Passaic County Democratic screening committee, which picked Berdnik for re-election.

  1. Didn’t he already leave Passaic county once before? why would anyone in their right mind elect a person who leaves mid term as Sheriff again? Sounds like he’s running out of money from the other 2 jobs he currently holds, he should stick to his current job as Paterson police director and worry about the corruption happening on a daily basis within his own department, but then again he is most likely in on it as well.

  2. Speziale is a camera whore , an actor in police clothing. He just wants his 15 min of fame back, since the Paterson PD is currently a cesspool im sure he will get plenty of camera time very soon lol
