Northvale Democrats dumped their municipal chairman on Thursday night, replacing him with a supporter of Gordon Johnson’s bid for a State Senate seat.
Ed Piehler, a former mayor, was removed as chairman of the local Democratic Party and replaced by Councilman John Hogan, a Johnson supporter.
Sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that Piehler’s removal had been in the works before Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg announced that she would not seek re-election to the 37th district State Senate seat.
Democrats called the special meeting to fill two vacant county committee seats in advance of the March county nominating convention.
At the same time, the committee voted to dump Piehler – he’d already been thrown out of the local Democratic Club for helping GOP candidates – and endorsed Johnson for Senate and Palisades Park Mayor Christopher Chung for the Assembly.
Independent Patrick Marana, a former Democratic councilman, defeated Piehler in the mayoral race by a 58%-42% margin.
Piehler, the Bergen County Superintendent of Recycling, declined to comment.
