Gov. Phil Murphy will endorse former Gov. James E. McGreevey for mayor of Jersey City on Sunday, the New Jersey Globe has confirmed.

Murphy is taking sides in the race to succeed three-term Mayor Steve Fulop, who is seeking to replace the term-limited Murphy as a candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

McGreevey faces Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea, City Councilman James Solomon, Council President Joyce Watterman, and former Board of Education President Mussab Ali in the November non-partisan mayoral election.

Murphy will announce his support of McGreevey at the Monumental Baptist Church.

McGreevey, who served as governor from 2002 to 2004, is seeking a political comeback as a candidate for mayor of the state’s second-largest city.

He has raised $1,977,142 as of the end of 2024 and has $1,121,491 cash-on-hand.  O’Dea has brought in $672,631 and has $565,241 banked, Solomon has $536,451 in his warchest after raising $619,323 in 2024, and Mussab has raised $292,037 with $122,865 remaining.  Watterman has not yet filed her fourth quarter report.
