Morris County freeholder race too close to call

By Nikita Biryukov, November 04 2020 12:10 am

The race for the remainder of Morris County Surrogate Heather Darling’s unexpired freeholder term is too close to call.

Democrat Cary Amaro leads Freeholder Tayfun Selen, who was appointed to fill the seat, by 8,359 votes, but most votes in the county remain uncounted.

As of 12:09 a.m., officials in Morris had counted 102,992, or 48.48% of the 212,430 mail-in ballots received in the county as of 6 p.m.

Selen, a former Chatham mayor, is seeking his first full term.

Democrats haven’t won a countywide election in Morris since 1973, when Douglas Romaine was elected freeholder.
