Monmouth’s countywide races won’t be called tonight

Countywide races in Monmouth County are too close to call.

Democratic freeholder candidates Moira Nelson and Michael Penna lead Freeholder Deputy Director Lillian Burry and running mate Ross Licitra by more than 6,000 votes with an unknown number outstanding.

County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon leads Democratic challenger Angela Ahbez-Anderson.

Despite Democratic gains at the local level, Monmouth has so far remained a Republican stronghold at the county level. Democrats have a 2,582-voter registration edge there.

The vote tallies don’t include provisional ballots, which won’t be counted until Nov. 11. They also don’t include late arriving mail-in ballots. Election boards will accept mail-in ballots postmarked by election day through Nov. 10. They also don’t include deficient ballots voters can cure through Nov. 18.
