Independent challengers in Holmdel have won one Republican seat on the city’s council, but whether challenger Cathy Weber remains in second place will depend on which way the 143 provisional ballots cast there break.

Weber’s running mate, Prakash Santhana finished in second place with 1,991 votes.

That puts him only 26 votes ahead of Republican newcomer Chiung-Yin Cheng Lui and 38 votes ahead of Mayor Eric Hinds.

Provisional ballots won’t be counted until next week, but the county clerk will continue to accept mail-in ballots post marked by election day through the Thursday.

Even after all the votes are counted, the result may be close enough to trigger a recount.
