The election to fill no-Assemblyman Anthony Verrelli’s vacant freeholder seat has Mercer County Democrats riled.

Running for the seat are Hamilton Fire Commissioner Joseph Zalescik, Lawrence Councilman Michael Powers, former West Windsor Councilman Kamal Khanna, Hamilton municipal committeewoman Nina Melker, Mercer County Meals on Wheels CEO Sasa Montaño, Catholic Charities’ Roberto Hernandez and Lance Lopez – a corrections officer who previously led PBA local 105.

Two candidates, Hamilton municipal committeewoman Tennille McCoy and Ewing Councilwoman Jennifer Keyes-Maloney have dropped out of the race.

It’s possible the six remaining candidates will be joined by others who have yet to announce their campaigns, as the county committee’s vacancy convention will take floor nominations, said Mercer County Chair Janice Mironov, though such nominations will create delays due to the committee’s use of voting machines.

That convention will take place at John Henry’s Stone Terrace in Hamilton at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
