Zalescik running for Verrelli’s freeholder seat

Longtime Hamilton Fire Commissioner Joe Zalescik is throwing his hat in the ring for the Mercer County freeholder seat vacated by Assemblyman Anthony Verrelli when he ascended to his current post.

Zalescik has been a fire commissioner in the town since 1992 and is Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners in Hamilton’s third fire district.

He previously sat on Hamilton’s Environmental Commission.

Mercer County Democrats will convene on Sept. 5 at John Henry’s Stone Terrace in Hamilton to vote on Verrelli’s successor.

In July, Verrelli narrowly won Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora’s seat in a runoff against over former Jeffrey Laurenti, a former executive director of State Senate Democrats. He was sworn in at the start of August.

Verrelli has stayed out of his succession race. It’s likely that this special election will trigger another election for a local office in the county.
