Two Jersey City police unions representing almost 1,000 local law enforcement officers are taking sides in the mayor’s race, backing former Gov. James E. McGreevey in the 2025 non-partisan municipal election.

The Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association and the Jersey City Police Superior Officers Association will announce their backing of McGreevey at an announcement at El Sabor Del Café this afternoon.

“Jim McGreevey comes from three generations of Jersey City police, said Pawel Wojtowicz, the superior officers association president.  “There is no better advocate for our department, and we are confident that he will be a Mayor who will work tirelessly to provide us with what we need to get the job done right.”

Joe Cossolini, the president of the PBA local, said his membership was “confident that he has the experience and vision to partner with us to ensure Jersey City’s safety and prosperity.”

“We have no doubt that Jim is the right individual to hit the ground running as our next mayor,” Cossolini stated.

McGreevey, who was born in Jersey City and then returned more than a decade ago, is seeking a return to public office as a candidate for mayor.

Bill O’Dea, a Hudson County commissioner since 1997 and a former Jersey City councilman, is already in the race.  So is City Council President Joyce Watterman, who quietly announced just before Thanksgiving.

Another city councilman, James Solomon, and others are mulling mayoral bids.

The incumbent, Steven Fulop, is not seeking a fourth term and instead is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor in 2025.

“I am honored to receive this important endorsement to create a stronger working relationship between City Hall, Jersey City Police Department, and the community,” said McGreevey.  “I look forward to working with Jersey City’s finest to provide the leadership and deployment of resources to improve the quality of life for all residents of our city.”
