Jersey City will begin providing free medical examinations for its immigrant residents and legal services for refugees and asylum seekers pursuing residency or citizenship, Mayor Steve Fulop announced Thursday.
“This is how America’s cities should be welcoming new immigrants, by focusing on health, inclusion, and supporting newcomers for the benefit of all,” Fulop said. “We remain committed to setting a national precedent for helping immigrants navigate the corridors of the federal immigration system, an often lengthy and confusing process.”
The medical examinations, a requirement for green card applications, will be administered by the city’s Department of Health and Human services at the Jersey City Hall Annex.
Legal aid for residency applications is being coordinated by the Jersey City Division of Immigrant Affairs
“Immigrant frontline workers carried us through the pandemic,” Jersey City HHS Director Stacey Flanagan said. “By helping refugees and immigrants navigate the system and access services, we’re strengthening public health and resilience for all.”
The new services will launch on June 20.
