Guzman takes Nunziato council seat in Rutherford

Ex-Nutley mayor is new Rutherford judge

Two decades ago, Wood-Ridge Mayor Paul Sarlo and Ray Guzman became friends when Sarlo’s son and Guzman’s daughter attended the same pre-K program.

Tonight, Guzman was sworn in as a new councilman in Rutherford by Sarlo, the chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and a legislator representing Rutherford since 2003.

Guzman takes the seat Frank Nunziato, who became the new mayor earlier this month.

Former Nutley mayor Joanne Cocchiola was appointed as the new Rutherford Municipal Court Judge.

A Republican who became political allies with Sarlo after Nutley Republicans John V. Kelly and Paul DiGaetano left the legislature, Cocchiola resigned a mayor in 2012 to become the municipal court judge.  She still holds that post.
