GOP flips two Gloucester County Commission seats

Nick DeSilvio and Chris Konawel, the two GOP candidates for county commissioner in Gloucester County, have defeated Democratic incumbent Commissioner Robert Damminger and his running mate, West Deptford Mayor Denise DiCarlo. As a result, the commission’s Democratic majority will drop from 7-0 to 5-2.

Democratic Gloucester County Sheriff Carmel Morina, meanwhile, is locked in a tight battle for re-election over Republican Jonathan Sammons.

The county commissioner results come as a significant shock in a county that hasn’t elected a countywide Republican since 2010. All three Republicans had run and lost in previous years: DeSilvio and Konawel last year, Sammons in 2018.

Gov. Phil Murphy is simultaneously losing the county by 10 points after winning it by 12 in 2017, and many state legislators from districts that include parts of the county – among them Senate President Steve Sweeney – are sweating in closer-than-anticipated races.
