Races for Gloucester sheriff and county commissioner are too close to call and likely won’t be decided for several days.
Three Republican incumbents are in close races to hold on to seats they won in 2021 in one of New Jersey’s swingiest counties. The number of uncounted ballots is over 5,000.
In a rematch, GOP Sheriff Jonathan Sammons trials Democrat Carmel Morina, the former sheriff, by just 240 votes.
The two Republican county commissioners are ahead. Nicholas DeSilvio (77,749) looks to be in good shape for a second term; Christopher Konawel (75,661) leads Clayton Mayor Tom Bianco (74,888) by 773 votes. Monroe Township Councilman Don Heverly, an Ironworkers union official, is 500 votes behind Bianco, his running mate. If DeSilvio and Konawel hold their leads, Democrats will hold on to their 5-2 majority on the Board of Commissioners.
Donald Trump is ahead by 4,651 votes and three percentage points. Trump won Gloucester in 2016 and lost it in 2020. But Democrat Andy Kim leads Republican Curtis Bashaw by 2,319 votes and 2.5%.
Sammons, DeSilvio and Konawel were boosted by Jack Ciattarelli’s 10-point win in Gloucester in the 2021 governor’s race.
