There was zero drama at the Somerset County Democratic convention on Thursday night after Democrats – calling their field of candidates “an embarrassment of riches” – awarded their organization slogan to all five gubernatorial candidates who participated in the screening committee process: Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly), Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), New Jersey Education Association President and former Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller, and former Senate President Steve Sweeney.
A sixth candidate, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, opted not to take part in any conventions. It’s unclear if being the only candidate for governor with a unique slogan will help or hurt him.
“New Jersey is lucky to have so many talented Democrats running for Governor, and we are excited to offer our slogan to all qualified candidates,” Schaffer stated “We look forward to a spirited primary, and will wholeheartedly support the Democrat who wins against whichever Trump-supporting, MAGA Republican comes out of their primary.”
Without opposition, primary endorsements went to Sheriff Darrin Russo, Surrogate Tina Jalloh, and County Commissioner Melonie Marano.
Endorsements for the State Assembly went to incumbents Roy Freiman (D-Hillsborough) and Mitchelle Drulis (D-Raritan) in the 16th, Joe Danielsen (D-Franklin) and Kevin Egan (D-New Brunswick) in the 17th, and James Kennedy (D-Rahway) and Linda Carter (D-Plainfield) in the 22nd. The party is also supporting Andrew Macurdy and Vinnie Kearney in the 21st and Guy Citron and Tyler Powell for Assembly in the 23rd.
