Edison police union endorses mayor for re-election

Edison’s police union endorsed Mayor Sam Joshi in his bid for re-election Wednesday.

The Edison Policemen’s Benevolent Association voted to endorse Joshi in December. Joshi, who is seeking his second term as mayor, faces three Democratic opponents in the primary, including Councilman Richard Brescher. 

Edison PBA President Michael Piperato said Joshi has brought police department staffing to the highest level in 18 years, pushed a crime bill to address burglaries, and added two police substations in Edison.

“The Edison PBA, which represents all sworn law enforcement officers for Edison Township, is committed to endorsing candidates who not only support the brave men and women of this profession but also support the overall mission of maintaining law and order for the citizens we are sworn to protect,” Piperato wrote. “Throughout his tenure as Mayor, it has been abundantly clear that law and order has been a top priority for Mayor Joshi.”

The union will mail its endorsement letter to Edison residents, according to a press release.

“The Edison PBA typically does not endorse candidates and did not take this decision lightly—this is the first time in over 15 years our local association has chosen to endorse a candidate,” Piperato said in a release.
