The party-backed slate of Democratic council candidates roundly defeated their challengers Tuesday.
Councilmen Ajay Patil, Joseph Coyle and their running mates, Richard Brescher and Joyce Ship-Freeman won the Democratic nod over Councilman Michael Lombardi, Councilman Leonard Sendelsky, Nimisha Shulka and Bhavini shah.
Coyle was the race’s top vote-getter with 5,582. Next came Patil with 5,473. Brescher got 5,397 and Ship-Freeman got 5,336.
In almost every case, the county-backed candidates more than doubled the votes of their challengers on the Edison Democrats 2019 line.
Lombardi was the only one spared the indignity of a getting his vote share doubled, though the reality wasn’t much better.
He got 2,637 votes. Sendelsky, Shah and Shukla got 2,361, 2,371 and 2,389 votes, respectively.
