The New Jersey Carpenters Union will back former Gov. James E. McGreevey for mayor of  Jersey City.

“New Jersey carpenters are most-skilled, highly-trained and union-proud, and we stand together for those who stand up for working people,” said William Sproule, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters.  “We are enthusiastic to endorse Jim McGreevey for Jersey City mayor, because he has the proven track record of fighting for what’s right, and he will make sure economic fairness and opportunity are prioritized at City Hall.  The needs of working people will never be forgotten when he is mayor.”

The Carpenters Union is one of the most politically significant labor unions in the state.  Its endorsement is typically accompanied by boots on the ground, campaign contributions, and potentially the votes of more than 250 Jersey City union members and their families.

“We are creating a movement to deliver the change Jersey City needs, and the addition of the carpenters to our coalition is another powerful example of our surging momentum,” said McGreevey.  “I’m proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the working men and women of the New Jersey Carpenters as we grow our campaign for an affordable Jersey City where all residents can achieve opportunity and prosperity.”

McGreevey is one of three announced candidates for a mayoral race that takes place in a November 2025 non-partisan municipal election.   Also running are Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea and Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman, who announced her candidacy late last Wednesday, just before the start of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Another city councilman, James Soliman, and others are also mulling mayoral bids.

Fulop, a candidate for the Democratic mayoral nomination, is not seeking re-election to a fourth term in 2025.
