Hopkins Kane will get Moen freeholder seat

By Nikita Biryukov, March 23 2019 11:59 am

Cherry Hill Councilwoman Melinda Hopkins Kane will be appointed to fill Bill Moen’s seat when the Camden County Freeholder leaves for the Assembly, sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the New Jersey Globe.

Kane, a gold star mother whose son was killed in Afghanistan, intends to run for the remainder of Moen’s unexpired term.

Saturday, Camden Democrats unanimously selected Moen, who is U.S. Sen. Cory Booker’s South Jersey state director, as their candidate for the fifth district seat left open by Assemblywoman Patricia Egan Jones’s decision to not seek re-election.

Egan Jones told the New Jersey earlier this month that she would prefer a woman fill her seat, adding that she thought “the die may have already been cast.”

Democrats boast a massive voter registration advantage of 46,404 in the fifth district. Republicans there haven’t sent won a seat in the legislature in almost five decades.
