Democrats win to hold unanimous control in Burlington

Felicia Hopson and Tyler Burrell were expected to win

Burlington Democrats maintained their unanimous grip on the county’s commission Tuesday, as a pair of Democrats held off Republican challengers in a race expected to go to Democrats.

Felicia Hopson won reelection and will be joined by Delran Council President Tyler Burrell, who in 2021 became one of the youngest council presidents in New Jersey’s history. Hopson has served as a commissioner since 2019.

As of 9:19 p.m., the Democrats are leading their GOP opponents 32%-18%.

A spot for Burrell opened after Commissioner Dan O’Connell decided not to seek a third term. Burlington Democrats took over unanimous control of the county board in 2020 — the commission was completely Republican just three years prior.

Insurance worker Johnathan Duff and Nick Pawlyzyn, a New Hanover committeeman, comprised the GOP ticket.

Burlington faced some chaos on Election Day. There were massive lines at polling locations throughout Burlington County — some reports put the waiting time at three to four hours for thousands of voters — after a confluence of problems, none of them nefarious, created massive backups today.

A judge ordered polling locations in the district to remain open until 9 p.m. because of the delays.
