Democrats eked out a one-vote victory in a race for the Bound Brook Borough Council, and Republicans held on to a seven-vote win in Bernards after Somerset County election officials certified the results of the November 6 general today.
Bound Brook Councilman Shawn Guera defeated GOP challenger Mark Speed, 698 to 697. Speed had a two-vote lead until the counting of provisional ballots.
Another Republican, Glen Rossi, flipped a council seat; he was the top vote-getter with 723 votes. Democratic incumbent Abel Gomez has 686 votes.
In the race for mayor, Democrat Dominick Longo defeated Republican incumbent David Morris by 82 votes, 750 to 668. Morris had become mayor last year following the resignation of Bob Fazen.
In the race for two Bernards Township Committee seats, Republican Township Committeeman Gary Bauman scored a seven-vote victory over Democrat Puiwan Lily Wong, 4,000 to 3,993.
Democrat Ana Duarte McCarthy was the top vote-getter in the race for two seats with 4,034 votes. The other Republican candidate, Tyler Seville, has 3,963 votes.
McCarthy, the sister of Morris County Democratic Chair Amalia Duarte, has flipped the seat held by retiring Republican James Baldassare.
Republicans went into the election with a 5-0 majority.
