Bergen Democrats back Joe Biden

Bergen County Democratic Chairman Paul Juliano and a host of the county’s top Democrats, including the county’s entire legislative delegation, backed former Vice President Joe Biden for the Democratic nod to take on President Donald Trump Tuesday.

Among the elected officials endorsing Biden are Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, State Sens. Paul Sarlo and Joseph Lagana and Assembly Members Clinton Calabrese, Valerie Huttle, Gordon Johnson, Gary Schaer, Lisa Swain and Chris Tully.

“This November, there is so much on the line for our country and the stakes have never been higher. To beat Donald Trump, retake the Senate, maintain our majority in the House and elect Democrats up and down the ballot in Bergen County, we need the strongest candidate on top of the ticket – a candidate for President who knows how to bring people together and can rally both Democrats and Independents. Without question, Joe Biden, who has spent his entire life fighting for our Democratic values, is that person,” they said in a joint statement. “We know he will lead us to victory in November, and as President, guide our country towards a stronger future where all Americans have the opportunities they need to succeed. It is with great pride that we enthusiastically endorse former Vice President Joe Biden to be our nominee and the next President of the United States.”

Biden also got the backing of County Executive Jim Tedesco, Freeholders Mary Amoroso, David Ganz, Germaine Ortiz, Steven Tanelli, Thomas Sullivan, Dr. Joan Voss and Tracy Zur, sheriff Anthony Cureton and county clerk John Hogan.

The county’s four legislative district chairs, John Bang, Frank Del Vecchio, Esther Fletcher, Bernadette McPherson and Todd Sherer also endorsed Biden.

There are 236,159 Democrats in Bergen, about 10% of the 2.3 million registered for the party in New Jersey.

As a point of reference, There are 276,385 registered Democrats in the state of New Hampshire.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D-NY) defeated U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) 62%-38% in 2016’s primary.

Sanders is Biden’s only real primary opponent.
