Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti has added Eric Scheffler, the Atlantic County Sheriff, to her list of supporters as she seeks the Democratic organization line for County Clerk.

“Mayor Jiampetti brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to county government,” said Scheffler. “She has been a longtime supporter of mine and I look forward to working with her as a fellow constitutional officer in county government.”

Scheffler was the highest-ranking local officeholder to support Amy Kennedy for Congress when she sought the endorsement of the Atlantic County Democratic organization last year.

Jiampetti also has the backing of Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo (D-Northfield) and John Armato (D-Buena).

Both legislators had called for the incumbent, Democrat Ed McGettigan, to retire following a massive ballot mishap in the 2020 general election.

Jiampetti faces Calvin Ferrara, the deputy political director for House bid, and Mico Lucide, who is advocating for the redesign of ballots that would effectively eliminate  the organization  line.

In the District 4 freeholder race, McGettigan admitted to mailing 2the wrong ballots to 554 voters in a race for county commissioner that turned out to be decided by just 286 votes.

As a result, Superior Court Judge Joseph Marczyk tossed the entire election and mandated a do-over.

Republicans had called for McGettigan’s ouster and have asked him to personally foot the bill for the new election.  Two Democratic legislators also told the longtime county official it was time to go.

Republicans are expected to run Hammonton Councilman Joe Giralo.
