The United Food and Commercial Workers District Council of New York and New Jersey endorsed Assemblyman Gordon Johnson (D-Englewood) in the race to succeed Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) in the legislature’s upper chamber.
“Assemblyman Johnson has supported our right to unionize without fear of management retaliation, to fight for higher wages and to create safe workplaces for our members,” said Max Bruny, the council’s president. “He will keep regressive right-to-work legislation out of New Jersey and will always fight to ensure our union members receive the respect and workplace dignity they deserve.”
Bruny also praised legislation expanding health care access sponsored by Johnson.
Johnson and his running mate, Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Englewood), are both seeking Weinberg’s seat. The majority leader is not running for re-election.
“We believe Gordon Johnson is a worthy successor to Loretta Weinberg’s progressive legacy,” Bruny said. “On behalf of our 75,000 Garden State members, the NY NJ District Council is proud to endorse Gordon Johnson’s candidacy for State Senate in the 37th Legislative District.”
