Senate President Nick Scutari (D-Linden), State Sen. Joe Cryan (D-Union Township), and their running mates have won re-election to their solidly Democratic districts in Union County, the New Jersey Globe projects.
In the Elizabeth-based 20th district, Cryan defeated Republican Carmen Bucco, while Assemblyman Reginald Atkins (D-Roselle) and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Elizabeth) beat lone challenger Ramon Hernandez.
And in the 22nd district, which covers a variety of diverse towns like Plainfield, Linden, and Rahway, Scutari, Assemblywoman Linda Carter (D-Plainfield), and Assemblyman James Kennedy (D-Rahway) won against Republicans William Michelson, Lisa Fabrizio, and Patricia Quattrocchi, the former mayor of Garwood.
Scutari is currently in his second year as Senate President, a position he unexpectedly ascended to in early 2022 following the defeat of former Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-West Deptford). He has spent much of his first term focusing on a few key issues, most notably property tax relief and elections reform – including the controversial Elections Transparency Act.
Tonight’s results in competitive districts will determine what Scutari’s likely second term as Senate President will look like. If Republicans make substantial gains, or if South Jersey Democrats hostile to Scutari are able to flip seats, Scutari’s leadership of the upper chamber may become a significantly more arduous task.
