Pou on new leadership role: ‘It’s a position I take very seriously’

In the wake of yesterday’s announcement that she would become part of Senate leadership as Senate majority caucus chair, State Sen. Nellie Pou (D-Haledon) said today that she’s excited about the newly created role.

“It’s a position that I am looking forward to doing and working closely with my colleagues,” Pou said. “I will be part of leadership, I will be part of setting the agenda and the policy decisions that go forward within our caucus and helping to make sure that our members feel as though we’re going in the right direction.”

According to Pou, while she’ll be the first senator to hold the position of majority caucus chair, the role wasn’t created specifically for her.

“It wasn’t as if it was just created with any kind of conversation beforehand,” she said. “But it’s a position I take very seriously.”

Pou’s ascension to legislative leadership will make her one of two Latinas to serve in leadership, alongside State Sen. Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark); Ruiz’s upcoming position as Senate Majority Leader makes her the highest-ranking Latina in state history.

It also marks a further reshuffling of the Senate leadership team following Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-West Deptford)’s shocking general election loss last month.
