State Sen. Joe Pennacchio slammed House Democrats over the passage of a resolution laying out the process for the public phase of their impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump Thursday.
“Today marks a sad day in American History. House Democrats codified the weaponization of impeachment and its self-serving ‘Kangaroo Court Rules’ that took direct aim at our Democracy,” Pennacchio said. “No longer do Democrats show any pretense of due process. The first casualty of this Democrat inspired political war was indeed the ‘truth.’ This trivialization of the impeachment process marks a turning point where National elections no longer matter. Where through legislative gimmickry the will of the people can be nullified.”
Pennacchio is an honorary state chair of Trump’s New Jersey re-election campaign.
House Democrats are investigating Trump over a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during which Trump asked Zelensky to investigate the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, who is and was a leading candidate for the 2020 Democratic nomination.
Thursday’s vote creates rules for the public-facing phase of an impeachment inquiry that has largely been conducted behind closed doors up until this point.
The measure allows the House Intelligence Committee to hold public hearings and create a report for the House Judiciary Committee, which will decide whether to draft articles of impeachment against Trump.
It also provides Trump with due process rights, including allowing his attorneys to participate in the hearings.
“Americans will take note,” Pennacchio said. “There will be a price to pay at the ballot box.”
