Payne boosts Murphy on weed

Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) has repeated his call to legalize marijuana in a tweet that could help Gov. Phil Murphy swing Newark legislators into the yes column.

“Marijuana legalization for adult use is the right choice for New Jersey. Legalizing adult-use marijuana will allow the state to regulate the drug and ensure its safety,” Payne tweeted.  “I applaud the expungement provisions developed by @GovMurphy and legislative leadership.”

Payne was a co-sponsor of a bill to legalize weed on the national level in the last Congress, but has not co-sponsored the version introduced by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Texas) this year.

His office did not immediately return a 5:18 PM call seeking comment.
